Although there are many variants of Poker, they all have an analogous method of playing and in general share the same hand ranking hierarchy. The main variants of Poker are categorized based on the method of card dealing and betting.
Straight Poker has its roots traced to a game called Primero, that later evolved into three-card brag, a game that was very popular during the period coinciding with the American Revolutionary war. It is a game that is still cherished in the United Kingdom today. In Straight Poker, every player is dealt a complete hand and the players are to bet in a single round. They have an opportunity to raise in the same round. In Straight Poker the final round usually involves straight hands of five cards. However, in order to create an opportunity for varied strategies, Poker is usually played using a format that is more complicated.
This is the second oldest family of Poker, a symbol of Poker’s progression from a three-card hand to one involving five cards. The cards were dealt at one card at a time with each card placed facedown or with the face up. In between each dealing was a betting round. Today the seven-card stud is more popular. In the seven-card stud seven cards are dealt to each player, three are facedown whilst four are face-up. From these cards, each player must create the best 5-card hand. The player with the best hand wins!
The most popular variation of Draw Poker is the five-card draw. In draw Poker, each player is dealt with a complete hand facedown. After a round of betting players are allowed to attempt to change their hand, in order to try to improve it. Players discard the cards they do not need and are dealt new cards.
Community Card Poker
Community Card Poker is also called flop Poker. It represents a variation of Stud Poker. The most popular Poker games in this category are the Omaha and Texas hold ‘em. In flop Poker, players receive an incomplete hand of cards placed facedown. Then a number of cards are placed face-up at the center of the table. These cards are known as community cards and every player can use any of the cards to form a 5-card hand.
Video Poker is a game that bears similarities to a slot machine in its function. The main type of Poker played on video Poker machines is draw Poker where the single player playing the machine bets and after the player has been dealt a hand, can discard unnecessary cards and have them replaced.
The payout depends on the resulting hand upon drawing and the initial bet placed by the player. Another variation involves the removal of clothes as players lose bets. This is called strip Poker and can be played with any other variant of Poker with few modifications. Other Poker games include Red Dog Poker or Acey-Deucy, which bears a closer resemblance to Blackjack, Three-Card Poker, Pai Gow Poker and Five-o Poker.
